====================
YES!  I’m waaaay behind on the blog.  So here’s an update about our final day at Huntington Beach State Park and the rest of November!
====================

On Monday, 11/4, we packed up and headed back to J. Strom Thurmond Lake Volunteer Village.  We followed Paul & Marti…

as far as Shaw Air Force Base where they turned off to stay for a few days.  Turns out, unbeknownst to Terri and I, Paul had been having some problems with his eye.  Long story short, he had to have emergency laser surgery to correct a serious tear in his retina.  You can read all about it here.  Terri and I continued on with an uneventful trip back “home.”  Paul & Marti finally made it back four days later on Friday, 11/8.  Paul has had follow-up visits, and his eye continues to improve.

On Saturday, 11/9, we met our RV friends Jim & Judy for lunch.

They were staying near us at Petersburg Campground after leaving Huntington Beach.  We had a delicious lunch at a local Mexican restaurant…

and a wonderful visit with them.  Terri and I look forward to seeing them again somewhere “down the road.”

On Wednesday, 11/20, we attended a pre-Thanksgiving pot-luck at the power plant below the dam at J. Strom Thurmond Lake…

with fellow volunteers, rangers, power plant employees, and others from throughout the J. Strom Thurmond Corps of Engineer project.  There was a lot of food…

and a lot of people!  The food was really good, and it was nice getting together with so many of the people that we’ve met while volunteering here.

On Saturday, 11/23, we tagged along with Paul & Marti to Lincolnton, GA, for the Lincolnton County Pioneer Day.  There are several buildings on the grounds that the county has “rescued” and preserved for future generations to experience.  There were also many displays, exhibits, and food!  We had a great time, and I hope to do a blog entry very soon specifically about our day there.

Of course on Thursday, 11/28, we celebrated Thanksgiving here with many of the other volunteers, and you can read all about it here.

Oh, and we’ve been working too!  In addition to counting the collected fees every week and making a bank run, we’ve also checked the supply and condition of life vests supplied by the Corps at beaches, performed safety inspections on grills and photographed those that need replacing, inspected and made a list of picnic tables that still need re-staining, performed an inventory of the unassigned keys, and took one of the Corps vehicles in for repairs.  We also retrieved four of the fee collection cans one day.

Terri and I are still really enjoying our time here volunteering.  Everyone with the Corps is so easy to work with, and we have a great bunch of volunteers here at the village.

Paul & Marti are with family today, so they were definitely missed here.  Of course there was a lot of great food and enough left for another meal tomorrow night!

I made dressing…

and gravy, of which I forgot to take a picture.  Terri made three pies, two pumpkin and one cherry!

There is some pumpkin pie left… but all of the cherry pie is gone!  Sorry Paul, but spending time with your family is worth missing a piece of cherry pie… right?

Terri and I hope that everyone had a great day!

Huntington Beach State Park… Day 7

Sunday 11/3/2013

Huntington Beach State Park

Murrells Inlet, SC

Today, Sunday, 11/3, we said our goodbyes to five couples.  John & Ginny, Jim & Dee, Howard & Linda, Hank & Selene, and Jim & Judy.  Kris left too, while Ray stayed one more night, but we bid her farewell the night before.

Before their departure, Howard & Linda weighed Jim & Dee’s and Jim & Judy’s rigs.  We gathered in the morning…

and soon they were ready to head over to the “weigh site” to get weighed.

Some of us headed over to watch.

Jim & Judy were first after stopping at the dump station.

at the scales.

After the weighing process was finished, we said our “see ya laters” to all three couples.  Jim & Dee and Jim & Judy were on their way out, and Howard & Linda were going back to their site to pack up and leave.  Terri and I also bid farewell to John & Ginny and Hank & Selene a little later in the day.

Shortly after noon Terri and I took a walk on the beach.

It was a beautiful day at the beach.

Later, Paul & Marti, George & Laurie, and Terri & I went to a local Chinese buffet for dinner.

The food was delicious and,  of course, I was stuffed when we walked out of there.  But then, I don’t think any of us left hungry!

On the way back home we stopped for gas.

It certainly was nice to see the price below $3.00!

We finished out the evening with one last campfire.

Tomorrow is a travel day for Paul & Marti and Terri & I.  We’ll be heading back to the Volunteer Village at J. Strom Thurmond Lake.
