Deer Run RV Park

Troy, AL

We’re still in Alabama!  We decided to stay here at Deer Run RV Park for another month, and we’ll probably stay here through the end of February.

This past Monday, the 23rd,  we had some very severe weather pass through Alabama in the early morning hours.  At least ten tornados were reported along with thunderstorms.  Fortunately for us, the tornado activity stayed north and we just received quite a bit of rain.  Sadly, though, there was loss of lives and extensive damage done up north of us.  Thoughts and prayers go out to all of them.

Wednesday, we had a beautiful, sunny, warm day.  We decided to take advantage of the weather and take a road trip.  I’ve been wanting to check out a few COE parks east of us near Walter F George Lake.  The lake is sometimes called Lake Eufaula and stretches about 85 miles up the Chattahoochee River along the Alabama/Georgia state line.  There are thirteen COE day use parks and four campgrounds.  We planned to check out three of the four campgrounds.

On our way over there, we stopped off at Blue Springs State Park in Clio, AL.  We wanted to check out the campground and possibly the springs.  The campground only has seven full hookup sites and several others with just water and electric.  The sites aren’t real defined.  I found myself looking for the utilities in order to tell where some of the sites are located.  Some of them weren’t real level and could possibly get quite soft with too much rain.  Because we still had other places to check out, we decided to skip the springs this time.

Our next stop was Cotton Hill COE Campground north of Fort Gaines, GA.  This campground was recently updated and is now a full hookup park with 50 Amp service.  A portion of the camping area was closed for the season, but we were able to get a good look at the park.  Most of the sites overlook the lake.  There are a few pull-through sites but mostly back-in sites.  The roads are paved and many of the sites have a concrete pad to park on.  Those without the pad are nicely graveled.  We both liked this campground, and we’ll probably try to stay there sometime soon.

The other two campgrounds we wanted to check out weren’t open.  The gates were closed, so we decided to head back home.  They’re both on the Alabama side of the lake.  The first one is Hardridge Creek COE Campground, and the other one is White Oak (Creek) COE Campground.  We were both disappointed that they were closed, but at least we were able to see Cotton Hill.  Actually, Cotton Hill was the campground I was most interested in seeing anyway.

The fourth campground is Bluff Creek COE Campground.  It’s located at the northern tip of Walter F George Lake in Alabama.  We haven’t stayed at a COE campground yet.  We’re both looking forward to it and hope to get to one soon.

On Monday I went ahead and signed us up for the RV-Dreams Spring Rally near Kerrville, TX, the last week of April.  Even though we’ve been to two rallies already, we want to revisit some of the seminars now that we have some fulltime experience behind us.  We also want to get our rig weighed.  We’re looking forward to seeing some of our friends from past rallies and meeting some new friends too.  The RV-Dreams rallies are always fun and informative.

Finally, here are a few photos from one of my early morning walks here at Deer Run.
